The RYA Coastal Skipper course is designed for sailors who already
have a foundation knowledge of navigation, tides, and basic
seamanship skills gained with the completion of the RYA Day Skipper
course.
Qualifications
The RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore theory course is
designed to meet the requirements for attendance onto the RYA
Coastal Skipper practical course and the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal
and Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence Examinations. In
order to enrol onto this course, you must have previously completed
the RYA Day Skipper theory or alternatively, if you have not
formalised your existing knowledge you can complete our Fastrack to
RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster theory Course.
The course is approximately 50-60 hours of study, followed by an
assessment consisting of three parts: IRPCS (1.5 hours), Chartwork
(2 hours), and Passage Making (3.5 hours). You have the flexibility
to take the assessment in one sitting, or as three separate papers.
Upon successful completion, this course awards the RYA/MCA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased theory certificate.
This course is suitable for commercial endorsement by having your assessment invigilated.
